For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reality in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. While other theaters did have a call on the fighter wings, by far and away the bulk of German day fighters in this period were employed in the air defense of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around later variants of the Bf-109 and the Fw-190, which were being continually modified and upgraded with new armament combination and employing new tactics to force down the U.S. heavy bombers. The reality of the air-war over Germany is demonstrated in this program, illustrating the battles fought by the Luftwaffe day fighter squadrons in their attempts to frustrate ever growing U.S. and allied bomber raids.

"The Battle of Britain," Chapter IV of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, begins after Hitler's conquest of Western Europe. Once firmly in control of the parts of France and Norway closest to Great Britain, the Nazis commence their massive air assault on the British isles. Outnumbered six to one, the fighters of the Royal Air Force defend their skies against the Luftwaffe for close to four months. Capra embellishes the British successes, for example the film claims the RAF fought 200 dogfights in the first thirty minutes of the battle alone, and that by the end of the first month they had destroyed 900 German planes. (In truth, the number is closer to 260). However, the success of the British defenses forced the Germans to change strategies, switching to more frightening night raids that terrorized London. But the British resolve won the day, in grand fashion. The film claims total German losses of more than 2,700. The real number is closer to 1,600. The number of downed British planes equaled approximately half that of Germany.

Target for Today is a 1944 documentary film billed as being filmed by and acted by the United States Army Air Force, all while under fire. It was directed by William Keighley. The film documents the October raids made by the Eighth Air Force on targets in Anklam, Marienburg and Gdynia in Poland, all industrial centers for the Nazi war machine.
The raids were made by B-17 and B-24 heavy bombers. General Hap Arnold called the series of attacks "the greatest strike ever". According to Arnold, they helped cripple German aircraft production and signaled the beginning of the end for the Luftwaffe.
The documentary documents these three air raids from planning, to briefing, preparation, and then reveals in unparalleled sequences the brutal battles waged at 30,000 feet.
